Pence Turns 12!
Plus: another trip to the vet, fireworks, and nail trimming
Hello! Hannah here with the latest happenings in Indiana.
Like most places, it has been brutally hot here for the last 10 days or so. The dogs haven’t been on as many walks because even after dark, the temperatures were still in the low to mid 80s with high humidity.
Sometimes Boo and Pence confuse me. Because, they’re huskies…right? But for some reason, when its in the 90s and sunny, they both enjoy laying outside? They’re strange lol.

We did have a few things that kept us busy over the last week.
Boo desperately needed his nails cut last week. And it was probably the most dramatic/traumatic nail trim thus far. At one point, he bit the nail trimmers and had them fully in his mouth trying to rip them out of the groomer’s hands. Boo was actually starting to bite at the groomer, so he had to be muzzled. He somehow bit his tongue and flung blood everywhere.
Eventually, all his nails were clipped and Beth took him to my dads to run off some of his anxiety and energy. Boo nearly lost his mind when a new neighbor’s wiener dog chased after him, but then he realized it barely has any legs and he could easily out run it lol.

Although both dogs were just at the vet a couple weeks ago and had great check ups, Riley discovered an anomaly in Pence’s ear last week. It was inside her skin, but was raised up, felt like it was fluid-filled, and about the size of a nickel.
Of course, I googled to find out what it may be. It seemed like it could be a hematoma. We decided to give it a few days to see if it would go away or get bigger. Unfortunately, a couple days later, it was bigger. Nearly the size of a quarter now, and definitely thicker.
I made an appointment and got her back in to the vet. The vet agreed and thought it was a hematoma. There are no cuts or insect bite marks that indicate it stemmed from something like that. From what I gather, one of the small blood vessels in the cartilage of her ear likely got hit and started leaking. The leaking hadn’t stopped yet internally, which is why it got bigger.

We were told to put ice packs on her ear a few times a day and that the cold should help clot up the blood. Eventually, he body should reabsorb it. Luckily, she’s not messing with it at all and it doesn’t seem to bother her, so we’ll continue to monitor it and hope it goes down soon.

PENCE TURNED 12!
On June 25, our girl Pence turned 12 years old!! She’s still as spunky and sweet as ever. I didn’t get any photos of it, but she and I shared a steak for dinner to celebrate! Riley also took her on a birthday walk.

Lastly, fireworks have been going off in our neighborhood over the last several days now. Of course, Pence is not a fan. For some reason, she thought that climbing up and sitting on my chest/shoulder would make her feel better. Whatever helps, girl.

That’s all for now! We hope everyone has a safe and fun fourth of July!
